Claim-day checklist

Claim day, step by step

What to do before, during and after the adjuster's visit. Your insurer decides what is covered; this helps you show what happened.

Take photos before anything is moved, covered or thrown away. If water is coming in, cover it, then photograph the cover. A phone is enough.

We are a contractor, not a public adjuster. We don't negotiate your claim. We write the scope of work, which you can give to your insurer.

The checklist

Three moments, fourteen things

  • Before the adjuster

    • Stay on the ground; never climb a damaged roof

    • Photograph each roof slope from the yard

    • Photograph every window, door and wet wall

    • Turn off power to wet rooms if it is safe

    • Call the tarp line to cover any opening

  • While the adjuster is here

    • Walk the house with them, room by room

    • Show the tarp and the photos of what is under it

    • Ask which items they want to see kept

    • Ask for the claim number and their direct line

    • Ask us to come along if you want

  • After they leave

    • Write down what they said, with the date

    • Keep every receipt for tarps, hotels and food

    • Send us the adjuster's report when you get it

    • We write the scope and estimate line by line

Questions

About claim day

Do I have to be home?

It helps. The adjuster has questions only you can answer. If you can't be there, tell us and we can let them in.

What if the adjuster comes before the tarp?

Fine. Photos are what count. Don't wait for the visit to cover the opening, because more rain makes more damage.

Can you talk to my insurer for me?

We can answer an adjuster's questions about the work. Your claim itself stays with you.

What if the numbers don't match?

Insurers and contractors often differ. We show you which lines differ and why, so you can take it up with your adjuster.
